I would love to follow Shah Rukh: Aamir Khan

Bollywood star and filmmaker Aamir Khan was at his humorous best when he came to promote his latest venture, Peepli Live, here on Wednesday evening. Churning out hits one after the other — Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini, 3 Idiots — both as an actor and director/producer, Aamirlooked youthful, relaxed and confident in a pin-striped shirt and blue denims at the full-house press conference.

Known for that slight arrogance, especially for skipping desi award functions, the star laughed at himself, cracked jokes with the media and made light of the comment that he was not following Shah Rukh Khan on Twitter. On why he was not following SRK’s tweets but was keeping track of Salman Khan, Aamir quipped, “I have many friends, but I don’t follow everyone on Twitter.”

When pressed further, he said, “There’s no issue. Of course, I would love to follow Shah Rukh.”

On Big B’s quiz show on television, Kaun Banegi Crorepati, Aamir said four generations in his family used to watch the programme together, and that he would love to see ‘Amitji’ in it.

After an hour-long question-and-answer session, when a reporter asked Aamir to comment on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s recent wedding, the actor laughed and said, “That means the last question has come.” Anyway, he praised Dhoni and wished him a happy married life. But that was not the last question as it was Dhoni’s birthday too. So, Aamir even sang ‘Happy birthday’ for the Indian skipper.

Eager to get more bytes from Aamir, when a reporter walked a few steps before asking her question, the actor said, “At the rate at which you are walking, you will soon reach my lap…” Aamir had everyone in splits.

In a promo for Peepli Live, a character in the film takes a dig at Aamir, saying, “Roz roz Lagaan nahi banta (You can’t make a film like Lagaan everyday).”On the strategy behind that promo, he said, “It’s better to poke fun at yourself before others can do it to you.” The film is a satirical presentation on how the media functions.

It was claimed that Peepli Live was a film about farmers’ suicides, but Aamir denied that. The central theme is around the character Natha, who decides to commit suicide, and Natha happens to be a farmer. But, according to Aamir and writer-director Anusha Rizvi (a former journalist), Natha could be anyone.
